Saltwater River

Published by admin on

Saltwater River is situated on the Tasman Peninsula, around 23 km from Port Arthur, and 106 km from Hobart. The historic site of the penal settlement coal mine at Saltwater River is listed on the World Heritage List. Today only ruins exist, including those of underground cells, but once the coal mines were known across the colony for their terrible conditions. The Coal Mines Historic Site is well worth a visit, and offers a different perspective on Tasmanian convict history to that of the nearby Port Arthur.
